This study investigates responsible tourism, in principle and practice, and justifies its merit as being an acceptable strategy for solving the issues and impacts associated with tourism, particularly with the mass tourism market. It explores the responsibilities and level of participation expected by the various actors involved in tourism. The study also seeks to identify areas in which barriers and challenges may exist, are being resolved and/or may generate new issues and concerns in the future. The researcher was seeking to obtain a better understanding of responsible tourism and gain insight about the different elements. The researcher also was interested in resolving the current misconceptions that surround responsible tourism.
